Description:

In this paper, we describe how processing Canadian bitumens and/or light tight crude oil may stress a refiner’s existing naphtha processing capabilities. We discuss a methodology for how best to improve naphtha processing capabilities and we offer new process unit and/or revamp options that may allow refiners to more fully enjoy the benefits from processing these lower-cost crude oils. This paper seeks to: 1. Describe the trends in crude oil production, in new regulations affecting fuel production, and in product demand that will increase pressure on the naphtha train. 2. Define a strategy to take advantage of lower-cost crude oils containing lighter components by identifying naphtha processing bottlenecks in the refinery. 3. Outline the technologies and configuration changes that should be considered as part of a strategy to process opportunity crude oils. 4. Propose a methodology to evaluate and rank the various options for improving naphtha processing to take advantage of low-cost crude oils containing light components.
