Description:

High oil prices over the years 1974 to 1986 fueled the broad commercial development and demonstration push in conversion technology experienced in the 1980s. Momentum then carried the work well into the 1990s. Such large-scale commercial demonstration of emerging capital intensive technologies is quite difficult in the current period of lower oil prices and narrower price differential between light and heavy crudes. However, in the developmental arena, slurry phase hydrocracking is poised to move ahead for high conversion processing of the most difficult residues.
