Description:

The case studies that follow clearly demonstrate the usefulness of a dynamic simulator and simulation engineer throughout a project life cycle. Recently, ConocoPhillips and Honeywell developed Shadow Plant dynamic models that were used at multiple refinery sites. The models were used for operator training, process design verification, testing equipment sizes, troubleshooting and other applications. This allowed engineers to face problems off the critical path and help them maintain or even accelerate the start-up schedule. The development of a dynamic simulator has many parallels with the construction of a new unit throughout the various project phases: definition, design, construction, commissioning, turnover, training and support. Its diverse personalities and application to many problems can justify the investment in dynamic simulation.
