Lubricating agents are a very important factor in processing polyvinyl chloride (PVC). To understand the need for lubricants a review of the PVC polymer is appropriate. Of all the thermoplastics in modern use today PVC probably has the longest history. The vinyl chloride monomer was first produced in France in 1835 and was first polymerized in 1872 by exposing sealed tubes containing vinyl chloride to sunlight.
