Keeping abreast with technology is key in maximizing profit from any process units in a refinery. In addition to improving process performance, technology upgrades should also improve reliability and unit operability. Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery (WRB) modernized the Reaction section of the #1 Catalytic Cracking Unit (CCU1) in Roxana, IL. The Project premised to capture the benefits of modern reactor, riser, reactor stripper, and feed nozzle technology by replacing this equipment with minimum scope, turnaround duration and impact to the existing structure. This paper will discuss in detail the project background and objectives, basis of technology selection and various challenges faced from project inception to completion. This joint paper by Phillips 66 and KBR will also discuss the yield improvements that were achieved along with lessons learned while executing this revamp.
