The NPRA Environmental Conference focuses on regulatory and policy issues at the plant level. The meeting format consists of both technical presentations and question and answer sessions. The sessions are designed to address the impacts of various environmental regulations on refineries and petrochemical plants and to provide solutions and compliance mechanisms for a facility. A poster session highlights technologies and systems developed or used by organizations to improve environmental compliance and controls. The Conference features industry experts from refining and petrochemical companies.

WORKSHOP - Greenhouse Gas management within the Refining Industry - Sunday, September 23 (separate registration fee required)
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions have emerged as one of the "hot topics" related to air quality in the United States. Regulations such as California's AB-32 and regional GHG initiatives like the Western Regional Climate Action Initiative and the Eastern Climate Registry have recently prompted attention. There is little doubt that the petroleum refining and petrochemical sectors will be affected by these new regulations and initiatives, as well as those still to come. Therefore, many oil and petrochemical companies are addressing the impending GHG issues ahead of the curve. Due to the timely nature of the topic and the rapidly-changing GHG landscape, this workshop topic is designed to serve as an informative update as well as explore some of the basic tenets in inventory development. Additionally, industry peers from Marathon Oil Corporation and Sunoco, Inc. will share their case studies related to their company's GHG inventory development. The workshop objectives are to provide attendees with:

  • The status of the current GHG initiativs from the regulatory, regional, state, and voluntary levels, including the development of the "Refinery Protocol" in California
  • Usable "take-away" information that can be used in developing their own credible GHG inventories
  • Refinery case studies from industry peers, focused on inventory development, the "business case", and realizing GHG reductions through effeciency improvements
  • <liTwo informative panel sessions to provide for Questions and Answers</li>
