Description:

Radiographic testing (RT), commonly referred to as x-ray, is used routinely within refineries. Conventional RT has been used for decades, using film and a radioactive source to create the viewable image that can be reviewed and evaluated for problems. Corrosion monitoring and quality control programs are two major areas of use within the refinery. The corrosion monitoring programs use RT to locate corrosion problems in piping systems. Corrosion under insulation inspection (CUI), small bore piping thickness and localized corrosion identification are three major uses within refinery mechanical integrity programs. Quality control programs use RT to verify weld quality on pressure vessels, tanks, and piping during initial construction as well as repairs. Digital RT has emerged within the last few years as a new technology that has several advantages which will be discussed throughout this paper.
