Description:

Phillips Petroleum Company has created a breakthrough technology, to aid refiners in meeting Tier II regulations and beyond. S Zorb Sulfur Removal Technology, which substantially lowers the sulfur concentration in FCC gasoline while still protecting octane-rich olefins and aromatics. Development of this process began in 1998. Following a review of available technologies we concluded that none of the existing technologies would cost effectively produce such low sulfur levels. With years of experience in selective hydrogenation, sulfur chemicals and catalyst development, it was a natural progression for Phillips research scientists to develop a proprietary adsorbent for the highly efficient removal of sulfur from FCC gasolines, even those high in sulfur. Compared to conventional, hydrotreating technologies, the Phillips process affords sulfur removal to Tier II levels with significantly less loss of octane and C5+ volume. This process can also achieve the even lower sulfur levels that some predict will be required after Tier II.
