Description:

The primary target in the near term will be diesel sulfur reduction as sulfur is perceived to be the enabler of advanced technologies for diesel emission control. While diesel sulfur reduction is a well-known art for U.S. refiners, the implications of producing diesel fuel at the ultra-low levels under discussion present significant new challenges. This paper addresses the practical implications of producing ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD). The title, The Lower It Goes, the Tougher It Gets, applies to hydrodesulfurization (HDS, revamp strategies, and unit/refinery operations.
