Description:

Hydrocarbons to Liquids (HTL) is intended to provide refiners an option for upgrading heavy oils and residues as well as petroleum coke to premium products. Specifications of refined products are becoming more stringent, particularly requiring lower sulfur content and higher hydrogen content. Current crude oil refining concentrates carbon, sulfur, metals and other constituents into the highest boiling streams. These streams typically are processed through upgrading and conversion processes such as resid fluid catalytic cracking, delayed coking or resid hydrocracking or the material is blended into various fuel oils. The HTL process option creates hydrogen plus carbon monoxide synthesis gas from low value hydrocarbons such as petroleum coke and other heavy oils. The synthesis gas can be converted into products that are hydrogen rich and sulfur free. HTL products are clean burning and transportation fuels containing HTL products show lower emissions. The HTL process facilitates capture of carbon dioxide for sequestering into a variety of uses. The hydrogen, steam and power by-products from the HTL process provide added value when integrated into the existing refinery infrastructure.
