Topsoe has supplied technology, catalysts and design for more than 180 plants producing hydrogen rich gas throughout the world. On February 24, 1998, Topsoe was awarded a contract for the design of a replacement hydrogen plant for the Chevron El Segundo Refinery. This article will discuss the initial problems encountered and project solutions implemented by Topsoe in building a replacement hydrogen plant within the refinery, satisfying strict environmental regulations and fitting into a tight space. The new hydrogen plant started up in July, 2000 and has met the expectations of Chevron.
