Description:

As a result of the Clean Air Act Amendment of 1990, reformulated gasoline (RFG) is now required in many areas of the United States and makes up ~30% of US gasoline sales.1 Further restrictions on motor fuel composition are also expected as a result of additional environmental regulations. In order to meet the goals for reductions in volatile organic compounds and other emissions, these initiatives will require lower levels of aromatics, olefins, and sulfur in gasoline. In addition, as MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is removed from gasoline, the associated octane and volume losses must be recovered.
