The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the removal of tetra ethyl lead from gasoline. At the time, numerous speeches and papers presented in industry forums such as this stated that the refining industry could not afford to remove TEL. Yet, over time, the industry was able to reduce, and eventually eliminate, lead in gasoline.
