The reaction mechanisms involved in extracting the last remaining sulfur molecules from the various diesel boiling range streams are different from those required to achieve a 500 ppm threshold or even a 50 ppm level. Understanding these differences will make it possible to identify more practical solutions to achieve the ULSD specification and help generate margin-enhancing ideas. In this paper we will discuss the 4 C’s of ULSD – Chemistry, Composition, Conditions, and Catalysis – and how these factors determine the best course for producing ULSD. This information will hopefully provide useful guidance for developing effective ULSD strategies and deciding how to optimize ULSD operations in the future.
