Companies operating refineries and petrochemical complexes face tough challenges in today’s environment. These challenges include eroding margins, increasingly complex technologies, a reduction in workforce experience levels and changing environmental regulations. This paper proposes that operators respond to these challenges by utilizing a strategy of continuous economic optimization which employs tools, systems and models to continuously monitor and bridge the economic and operational gaps in plant performance. This strategy is optimally implemented using web-based performance management. The benefits of executing work processes within this platform include improved plant economic performance due to an increased ability by operations to identify and capture economic opportunities, a sustained ability to bridge performance gaps, an increased ability to leverage personnel expertise, and improved enterprise management.
