Description:

For 30 years, environmental regulations in the U.S have been the driving force for changes in the formulation of gasoline. Beginning in 1975 with the initial stage of the lead phase-down program, and continuing on into the future, with the implementation of ultra-low sulfur gasoline and diesel fuels, refiners have had to implement processing changes to meet the regulatory challenges. The latest regulation, EPA’s Tier 2 gasoline sulfur control program, requires gasoline sulfur levels to average 30 ppm, with a cap of 80 ppm, by 2006. This represents a 90% reduction in gasoline sulfur from baseline levels.
