Description:

A new compact and ultra low NOx burner has been developed for reducing NOx emissions by up to 90% in refinery applications, including for example cabin heaters and vertical cylindrical furnaces. This recently patented burner, called the COOLstar® burner, is designed to easily fit into the furnace cutouts for conventional burners with few or no modifications. This new technology is based on advanced fluid flow techniques that control the mixing of fuel, air, and furnace gases to produce stable flames and low NOx over a wide range of operating conditions. Computational fluid dynamics modeling was used extensively in the design and development process. This round flame burner produces short flames and has at least a 4:1 turndown ratio. The burner can be natural or forced draft and can be operated horizontally or vertically. This paper discusses the burner development process, the field application of the technology, and safety issues related to low NOx burners.
