Once again refiners must address benzene in gasoline. As a result of new regulations being proposed by the EPA, all U.S. gasoline will be subject to restriction on benzene at levels far lower than those now applicable only to reformulated gasoline (RFG). Benzene reduction solutions that worked with RFG may not be sufficient to meet the new lower benzene levels and it will be necessary to examine solutions in the context of the entire refinery while taking into account new regulations on VOCs and ethanol blending.
