Alkylate is an ideal clean fuel component because it has a high octane rating, low vapor pressure and low toxicity. Alkylate is currently produced using toxic liquid acid catalysts. An engineered solid acid catalyst provides the basis for a clean and economically viable alkylation process to replace liquid acid processes. The catalyst is designed on multiple levels to provide high octane and long life. The performance of the catalyst permits the use of a simple fixed-bed process for alkylation. The process has been demonstrated in a pilot plant with several types of feed.
