Description:

Suncor had a 1952 vintage FCC unit at the Commerce City refinery. It was a challenge to upgrade the unit to meet the new MACT-2 emission standards. This paper will discuss how Suncor and Shell GS worked together to understand root causes of shortcomings of the existing FCC unit, followed by developing a revamp strategy that addressed all root causes impacting reliability and emission. The FCC revamp project was divided into two parts. The objectives for the first were to improve reliability by using Shell GS's air distributor and spent catalyst distributor. The objective for the second was to reduce particulate emissions using Shell GS_s regenerator cyclones and a Third Stage Separator (TSS) system.
