Impressive improvements have been seen at a North American refinery hydrocracker unit through better catalysts, internals technologies and planning. The cycle length of their hydrocracker has increased by over 35 percent, and product properties and yields were significantly improved. Particularly, this hydrocracker is able to meet the stringent ULSD spec of <5 ppmw sulfur for all distillate products. This location moved to a custom tailored catalyst load including new catalyst shapes and state of the art internals. These changes, along with improvements in operating procedures, have led to an increase in the C5 plus liquid yield of over 2 percent on feed at higher conversion and lower hydrogen consumption in addition to the increase in cycle length.
