AM-08-23 Improve Operator Situation Awareness with Effective Design of Overview Displays

This paper characterizes some of the critical, human factors design challenges associated with graphical, overview displays as well as the potential impact of those challenges on an operator‘s situation awareness. In addition, this paper presents illustrative interaction requirements that were used to design an overview display for an actual console position‘s span-of-control. This illustrative overview display is presented and a limited number of the graphical objects are explained, for the purposes of explaining how the design challenges were addressed as well as how the interaction requirements were satisfied.
