Cleaner burning motor fuels is just one small piece of environmental responsibility. But responsibility has a price tag. Figure 1 is a summary of gasoline price history and the costs of making gasoline burn more cleanly. The flags are essentially an outline of what I am going to cover. Each cost increment is based upon the estimated cost of each step at the time of implementation and the naïve assumption that refiners have a chance of recovering the inflation adjusted costs.
