This paper has a fourfold purpose centering on the opportunities and challenges that coal offers to refiners: 1. Understand the mining supply chain. 2. Describe different coal liquefaction processes to frame the opportunity in terms of environmental, processing, and operational needs. 3. Consider the environmental impact of coal-to-liquids processes along with the potential net change in CO2 emissions from refineries that will process coal or byproducts from coal liquefaction. 4. Understand the economic benefits of processing coal and/or incorporating coal liquefaction byproducts into refinery blending pools, as well as the operational impact on existing refinery units.
