ConocoPhillips (COP) Rodeo Refinery completed a control system modernization project which created a need for a replacement operator interface. COP partnered with Human Centered Solutions LLP to create an interface that incorporated human factors in the design principles. This paper describes the COP Rodeo Refinery and Human Centered Solutions LLP project team’s approach in developing these principles which were based on guidelines from the Abnormal Situation Management Consortium ®. In addition, the strategic elements of the designs are highlighted to illustrate the nature of the transition from past practices. Key success factors as well as challenges are discussed.
