This paper will discuss themerits of combining additives and barrier filters as a cost effective and highly efficient alternative to current options. Both have been proven separately, and the combination now offers a Best Available Control Technology (BACT) that can meet SOx (and NOx) targets of 25-200 ppm,and particulate matter emissions to levels below 10 mg/Nm3. Specific examples will be given of how some refineries, in different parts of the world, have dealt with these challenges, and the rationale behind the choices made will be explained.
