The MSAT 2 regulations promulgated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency require that refiners meet certain specifications for motor gasoline, most notably benzene content. Many of the larger refiners have already made plans to shift their operation or to add new equipment to meet this requirement. As we move into the next phase of implementation, the large refiners must finalize their plans; while the small refiners should choose among the options to achieve this specification by January 1, 2015. This paper presents the alternative of benzene reduction within the concept of isomerization.
