Description:

Does your safety program deliver the results that you desire? Are your injuries and incidents in control? Do you find that you cannot move your organization to achieve safety excellence and one of zero injuries? Although all the elements of a well executed safety program were in place and injuries were reduced over time, the site still experienced at least one Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incident annually. With the desire to improve the current performance, the site developed and implemented a program to emphasize “Nobody Gets Hurt.” The program consists of key initiatives and drivers that helped enhance leadership and colleagues’ behaviors to deliver a cultural change and produce the desired performance of zero injuries. The paper describes the steps the company took to achieve the goal and discusses such topics as goal setting, systems to set up performance accountability, and actions taken to demonstrate leadership commitment and elevate the awareness of the “Nobody Gets Hurt” culture. As a result, the site, which includes both colleagues and contractors, has achieved over 44 months (2.7 Million work hours) as of 1/31/2011 without a recordable incident.
