Description:

In the current refining margin environment, achieving variable cost improvement in a fiscally effective manner will be crucial to ensure long term viability of the refinery. Due to the large amount of energy used in Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), improvements in hydrogen production energy efficiency will have a substantial impact on the refinery cash flow profile. Praxair has developed an approach to monitoring and improving the conversion efficiency of feed gas to hydrogen that allows the SMR operator to easily identify and respond to factors impacting efficiency. This paper reviews the application of this approach/methodology on operating SMRs.
