This paper will focus on the use of high Z/M catalysts which tend to perform extraordinarily well in lab test units. Moreover, the customer may not be aware that the optimum catalyst for the test is often not the optimum catalyst for the unit. A supplier may then hope to correct that with a catalyst reformulation once the refiner is using their catalyst. Occasionally this leads to serious failures in the FCCU, while other times the refiner simply leaves money on the table by not using the optimal catalyst technology.
