Description:

We always talk about adult learning principles and adult learning theory but I am not sure we are actually all fully aware of what that implies. For years (decades actually) the process industry (i.e., refining, petrochemicals, and chemicals) has utilized pedagogical principles to design operator training programs, and in fact this is a term that many “learning professionals” in our industry like to throw around. While the common use of the word pedagogy refers to strategies of instruction, the original Greek derivative of the word is “child-leading.” Even though the term is more broadly used to describe all instructional strategies, most training professionals apply child-learning principles, which are content focused, when developing operator-training programs and hence are in actuality being true to the original meaning of the word pedagogy. To be more accurate and to provide a more effective basis for developing operator-training programs, an andragogical (man-leading) approach should be taken.
