In 2012, hydrogen manufactured by steam-methane reforming (“on purpose” hydrogen) provided approximately two-thirds of the refinery hydrogen supply for US and Canadian refineries.1 Manufactured hydrogen has become increasingly important as clean fuels regulations increase hydrogen demand, while renewable fuels mandates decrease byproduct hydrogen from catalytic reforming. This paper describes changes in US and Canadian refinery supply and demand over the past decade.
