Tightening fuels specifications, hydrocracking and the upgrade of the hydrogen deficient bottom of the barrel mean that most refineries have already, or will soon invest significantly in on-purpose hydrogen production. Hart Energy(1) proposes that more than 14 trillion SCF of on-purpose hydrogen will be needed between 2010 and 2030. Asia Pacific and Middle East will represent nearly 40% of global hydrogen requirements and nearly 2/3rds of incremental refinery hydrogen demand will be for expanding hydrocracking operations.
