Description:

Shell’s Puget Sound refinery completed a safe and successful turnaround to revamp the refinery’s fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit in early 2014. An inspection during the previous turnaround suggested that the anticipated repairs to the end-of-life FCC riser and stripper would result in an extended turnaround. Consequently, Shell chose replacement as a more cost effective option versus refurbishment and repairs. Additionally, upgrades over replacement-in-kind were justified on the basis of an annual margin benefit predicted as a result of the riser and stripper replacement.
