The global product slate has shifted towards middle distillates from gasoline although very attractive pockets remain where gasoline and, frequently propylene, are driving refinery configurations. In almost all cases, the production of high sulfur residual fuel oil is deemed unfavorable. Over the last several years refiners have been looking at alternates to delayed coking, the erstwhile workhorse of the industry, to extract maximum value from vacuum residue.
