Description:

Mercury is found in trace quantities in all forms of hydrocarbons including natural gas and petroleum. The discovery of mercury in hydrocarbons associated with North Slope crude oil processing is a relatively new occurrence and even in trace concentrations presents complicated health risks, environmental risks, and hydrocarbon processing risks. Energy companies engaged in production and processing of hydrocarbons should understand the risks, and liabilities associated with produced mercury. As part of understanding these risks companies should implement a comprehensive mercury management program that maps mercury in hydrocarbon processing systems, identifies and monitors worker exposure and mitigates processing risks.
