The last 15 years of passenger car and commercial vehicle motor oils (PCMO & CVMO) have seen a development towards lower viscosity multigrades in most industrial&d countries. In the US, this has been strongly driven by a need to achieve better fuel economy as defined in CAFE legislation. Today only two grades are recommended bu US automobile manufacturers - namely SAE 5W-30 and lOW-30. It has been stated that his would be reduced to just one (5W-30) if only performance limitations could be overcome. Very High Viscosity Index (VHVI) base stocks may well help overcome many of these performance limitations.
