Description:

When legislation was passed in the 1970’s to reduce the lead content in gasoline, refiners were required to adjust the composition of the gasoline to maintain or increase the unleaded pool octane. Now almost two decades later, refiners face new environmental legislation that again will force changes in the gasoline pool. The major changes include adding oxygenates, lowering Reid vapor pressure (RVP), and reducing benzene concentration. This paper discusses the production of oxygenates, namely methyl m-butyl ether (MTBE), from butanes.
