Fluid cracking catalysts were revolutionized when zeolites or molecular sieves were incorporated into their structure in the 1960's. Over the years (Table 1) the concentration of zeolite has been greatly increased while the variety of sieves has mushroomed 0 to meet the growing demands of the refining industry. The rest of the catalyst is known as the matrix and it too has evolved over the past three decades.
