Description:

Bitumen-derived coker gas oil was hydrotreated in pilot scale trickle-bed reactors over commercial NiMo/AlzOs catalyst in three forms: (1) fresh, (2) the same brand as the fresh but commercially regenerated after use in a Syncrude naphtha hydrotreater, and (3) same brand used in the naphtha hydrotreater, then in a gas oil hydrotreater, with regeneration after each use. Start-of-run activities as determined by sulfur and nitrogen removal, aromatics hydrogenation, mild hydrocracking, and density and viscosity reduction were measured. Fresh catalyst was markedly the most active. Surprisingly, the activity of the twice-regenerated form was closely similar to that of the once-regenerated catalyst. Considering activity alone, twice-regenerated catalyst may be used again for hydrotreating.
