Description:

The years of the lead phasedown created fuel-composition problems detrimental to air quality. They are now scheduled to be adjusted by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Industry studies, some in progress, will assist the EPA in fine tuning parameters for future gasoline and diesel composition. Refining options are available to handle reformulation and meet the projected composition of the U.S. gasoline pool for the year 2000. However there is opportunity for innovative-new technology to increase process flexibility and reduce costs. Ethers highlight the reformulation of gasoline and will impact hydrocarbon composition in a variety of ways to improve air quality. Another costly problem for industry will be satisfying requirements for diesel fuel regulations in the face of increasing demand and less hydrogen from naphtha reforming.
