At the beginning of 1990, the Clean Air Act restricting inter alia the maximum benzene content in gasoline to 1 % vol. as from 1994 came into effect in the USA. In addition, the government of California has added a further degree of stringency to this Act by specifying a maximum benzene content of 0.8 %.
