Description:

The Mizushima Oil Refinery of Japan Energy Corporation has succeeded in an high conversion operation of vacuum residue in the residue hydrodesulfurization unit embodied with the conventional fixed bed reactors. Hot spots and pressuredrop buildup were in the way of completing a six month-cycled operation. The methods developed to improve liquid distribution in the bed have demonstrated their effectiveness to prevent hot spot occurrence through the commercial trial runs. The optimum combination of catalysts with different size, shape, and activity has also been effective to control a pressure-drop buildup in the first bed caused by plugging. The catalyst in the last bed was found to be most deactivated by coke fouling. The commercial experience showed that optimizing each bed temperature, or conversion in each bed, could control the coke deactivation in the last bed.
