Description:

Refiners in today’s competitive market are constantly searching for new and innovative ways to improve overall plant profits. These methods include reducing processing costs, implementing computer control systems. controlling expenses. and the processing of less expensive crude oil. The phrase that has been applied to these lower cost fecdstocks in recent years is “opportunity crudes”. A simple definition of opportunity crude is. any crude oil that is priced below the normal crude benchmark, regardless of its gravity, sulfur content, or acid number. Aitru1sm and compassion very seldom set the price for crude oil purchased at the refinery. In the example above. the crude is several dollars less per barrel for a good reason. In all but a few rare cases. the less expensive crude will create operating or processing limits that through supply and demand will set the lower price. The reason Betz Process Chemicals, Inc. developed ENVISION>‘, an experiential data base, was to quantify, identify, and provide examples of potential solutions associated with processing opportunity crudes.
