Description:

In many parts of the world, new process units or even new grassroots refineries are being built using the latest catalyst and process technology. The majority of participants in this 1997 NPRA conference are operating in a different arena: they must do the best they can with existing units. UOP uses the concept of asset management to provide technology for upgrading such units. This paper describes catalyst developments and mechanical revamps aimed at getting the most out of existing units and allowing them to compete with newer units. Improvements can be obtained in run length, yield maximization, feedstock flexibility, product specifications and performance, and mechanical reliability to ensure the best-possible economic return from capital already on the ground. Case studies based on real applications provide examples of how asset management can have value in a variety of situations.
