Description:

This paper focuses on development activity related to automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) for General Motors Corporation, Chrysler Corporation and Ford Motor Company applications. The data presented compares ATFs for these North American OEMs in some pertinent test procedures. The tests mainly relate to transmission durability from an oxidation stability and a shear stability perspective, including other related parameters of interest. The ATFs of interest are formulated with more oxidatively stable base oil. Enhanced performance in these tests is expected to improve automatic transmission durability, benefiting customer satisfaction. Before comparing the data, a brief review of market drivers and past studies explains how this information relates to benefits to be gained from these revised ATFs.
