Description:

In order to improve margins, many refiners are investigating the potential of using their existing hydrotreaters in order to process feed stock blends which contain atmospheric and vacuum residue components. These hydrotreaters may have been designed for processing lighter feed stocks and thus, typically operate at a lower pressure and higher liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) than units designed specifically for processing atmospheric and vacuum residue feed stocks. Based on discussions with various refiners, a range of potential feed stocks and high severity process conditions were identified and used in an extensive pilot plant study. The catalyst system needed to be flexible and stable enough to upgrade and process this wide variety of atmospheric and vacuum residue blends, which include South American residues that are extremely high in metals content, while achieving an economical run life.
