A variety of resid conversion options are available to the refiner that is considering a resid conversion project. However, choosing the most suitable option can be a very difficult and time consuming process. The most suitable option is so strongly dependent on the assumptions made on prices, configurations, and required product slate that it is difficult to establish even reasonable guidelines for process selection. In reality, the most suitable option is strongly influenced by client and location specific factors. Nevertheless, it is possible to evaluate the various resid conversion options while considering the most common factors that affect selection to obtain some helpful guidance for those considering a project. This paper will explain the methodology and conclusions from such a study using all of the available resid conversion options.
