Running higher and higher throughputs with optimum selectivity makes or breaks the vitality of the FCCU. Advancements in hardware have enabled breakthrough results in driving the cracker to new levels of output. This has placed significant challenges on catalyst manufacturers to increase the technology supplied in the FCC catalyst. In the last three years alone FCC vendors have been able to supply 30% more activity per unit of catalyst weight than before. Physical integrity of the catalyst has also been improved to withstand the increased brutality of harsher operating environment. As a result of advanced materials science, new technology has been employed in the design of matrices and zeolites which are capable of providing enhanced selectivity both for producing desired products as well as removing unwanted and detrimental contaminants.
