The SURETM Double Combustion technology has been in use in refineries since 1990 to provide increased sulfur plant capacity with oxygen at moderate operating temperatures. More recently, a unique adaptation of this technology has provided the client with even greater flexibility, while retaining the capacity improvement potential of this process. This paper describes the technology employed at the api anonima petroli italiana S.p.A (API) Falconara refinery, and the operating experience since start up in October of 1996. Special attention is paid to operation, emphasizing the points that may be useful in the operation of other units and to explore results that may be achieved in future projects.
